Joy and I just got home from delivering the last of the toys. So today I took the food to the Interfaith Food Pantry wrote them a check for $800. Then I went to the Women's Crisis Center gave them a bunch of toys and a check for $800. I gave more toys to a local church that needed them and finally gave the rest to the Salvation Army so they could give them to their Angel Children. You guys are awesome

Senate Committee Passes Highway Safety Bill Wednesday, December 14, 2011 Today, the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation passed a sweeping safety bill known as the Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act (S. 1449). The bill passed by voice vote. Earlier this week, Senator Lautenberg (D-NJ) filed an amendment that would have gutted the popular federal motorcycle education and awareness grants, known as the 2010 funds. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is pleased to report that Lautenberg did not call that amendment for a vote. Due to an overwhelming response from the motorcycle community, the 2010 grants are safe for now. Also under attack was the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lobby ban. This law prohibits NHTSA from using federal money to lobby State legislatures, uninvited. The way S. 1449 was drafted, it removed this lobby ban. Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) introduced a number of amendments to maintain the ban and the necessary amendments were agreed to, by unanimous consent of the full committee. The one sticking point that remains is at least, the least troublesome. That being said, it is still something that will keep the attention of the MRF lobby efforts. The trouble lies in a provision in S. 1449 that calls out motorcycle helmets in the list of definitions as "motor vehicle equipment". Previously, the list simply stated: "any device or an article or apparel... that is not a system, part, or component of a motor vehicle". The MRF would like to thank all the State motorcycle rights organizations and everyone else who helped with this legislation. The bill passed today will likely move on to be a part of the larger Highway Bill which could happen in early 2012. The MRF will keep you informed on this issue.

I heard a saying years ago, Howard Cosell said it on Monday Night Football. "The dog barks but still the caravan rolls on." Sounds a lot like The Biking Life. Over the years many dogs have barked as we rolled down the road but still we roll on. The Biking Life is here for the long term and we are eagerly looking forward to our 10th Anniversary. In this day and age 10 years is a long time to stay in business and that milestone is not far away at all now. The reason is great people like you have welcomed us into your homes and shops for that we say thank you.

I got a lesson today in what money can do for you. Another business entity took exception with the name of our swap meets they did not like the combination of the words Midwest and motorcycle. Not a problem I was never overjoyed with that name anyway. So going forward they will be known as what they are The Biking Life (or TBL) Motorcycle Swap Meets. Same owner as ever me. I am not trying to play some shell game like others. The name change is only because I would like to keep my financial resources for something other than legal fees. I hope to see many of you at our events, Ask your friends who has the best assortment of vendors, ask your friends where they have the most fun and you'll know why you should be there to.

Here is an excerpt from the Alton Telegraph concerning Grafton's noise ordinance. It says here that ABATE has no issue with the law. I have heard some say differently but my friends in Piasa Gateway have posted no negative comments towards Grafton so I am not sure where some are getting their information.

GRAFTON - After years of failed attempts to enact a noise ordinance, the City Council finally voted "yes" to such an ordinance.

Even though some people publicly opposed a noise abatement ordinance, many welcome the new mandate. The Grafton City Council voted "yes" for the ordinance, with newly appointed Alderman Pam Bick abstaining because she was appointed at the same meeting Tuesday night.

Alderman Joyce Harmon was absent. Bick filled former alderman Steve Hayes' 2nd Ward seat, which he abruptly vacated after the April municipal election. Some music establishment owners and managers opposed the ordinance, but an ABATE representative said its organization was not upset about it.

"They said they didn't see anything in the ordinance against people who ride motorcycles," Mayor Tom Thompson said.

What an awesome day. The Motorhead's Kenny Hoffman Memorial Poker Run was a ton of fun featuring good stops, nice route and a tremendous ending emceed by noe other than our own Jim Furey. Middle East Turmoil

Has anyone else thought that perhaps the oil companies are behind the uprisings in the Middle East? I know they look political but the price of oil has been stagnant for a while. My point is what if this is all being done to get the price of oil back up again. It is working and I am sure in a few months the big oil companies will once again be reporting record profits. Not saying this is for real only that it is a possibility.

The reason I suggest this is I have never seen so many rebellions all going on at the same time. It makes it seem orchestrated.

Geo's Is Open

Geo's 4307 West Main St will be open this evening as a bar and featuring karaoke. In an incredible show of support local bikers and friends all came together today to help George and Karen clean the place up and the health inspector came by and said you are good to go to open as a bar this evening. So this evening the plan is a quick stop at the 100 MPH Clubhouse for their Barn Bash and then off to Geo's to help support our friends in both places.

Go out to George and Karen owners of Geo's Wings last night there was a fire at the restaurant luckily no one was injured. There was some damage but most was confined to one area and then the smoke. Putting the finishing touches on the March issue

I am finishing up the March issue and I think it will be one that makes us proud. It won't be long now till we will be celebrating completion of our 8th year of publication. Quite an accomplishment in these days and one I thank all of you for making possible. It is your support of the magazine and our advertisers that make that possible. Wide Open Show

Well the Wide Open Show is over and it was a great weekend for us. We got to see tons of friends and supporters and also maybe met some folks who will help the business. I need to be reminded sometimes that it is a business. One potential advertiser took a survey of attendees between us and our competitors and told me the results were overwhelming in our favor. Thanks to all of our supporters.

Also our apologies to not making the benefit in Highland but by the time we got loaded up, it was pretty late.

Things Have Been Crazy

Well it has been a few days since I've [posted here. The world is spinning pretty fast right now. Hopefully it slows down soon. Joy and I had a great time at the show in Chicago. It is really something you should experience it dwarfs anything that goes on around here and deserves the description extravaganza. The snow there wasn't as bad as we thought it might be and there were huge crowds, been busy delivering magazines and doing other things this week and now we are getting set to go to the Wide Open Show this weekend at the family Arena in St Charles this is always a good time and we invite you to stop by our booth while you are there. Also on Sunday there is a benefit at the Corner Keg in Highland it starts at 1:00 and goes for a while. We hope to stop by there after the show for a minute.

Finally got the truck rolling today and actually not a bad day at all. Just a little while till it will be time to get back out on the road and head to Chicago for one of the biggest swap meets around at McCormick Place. Last year this was a lot of fun and this year promises to be even better depending on what the weather gods have in store for us. Also depending on when they arrive tomorrow you may start seeing the magazine at local establishments as early as tomorrow but maybe later. Joy and I are truly pumped about our upcoming trip to Chi town for the Chicago Motorcycle Show and Parts Expo at the McCormick Place. This will feature some of the best vendors around and there will be the unveiling of the Mowhawk Man's Tribute Bike designed and built by Psychotic Air. I have seen snippets of it in pics but not the whole thing, but from what I have seen it should be off the charts. If you make it up there stop by our booth and say hello. Nobody Tells Us What To Do

I recently had someone offer to write a column for the magazine. He told me that others were already going to print it. Then he gave me a list of conditions to agree to. The column idea was a good one and one I have been pursuing with someone else. However we at The Biking Life do not allow anyone to dictate what our policies should be. We are independent I guess if you are a franchise business though you are probably used to having someone dictate what your policies should be.

Also as I have said before both here, in the magazine and to potential submitters, The Biking Life prints unique stories and features, with the exceptions of press releases and written advertisements. You will not find stories in The Biking Life, that you have read elsewhere. We have enough unique content to fill a couple of magazines every month.

An Original Idea

Once again it has been documented we at The Biking Life just have better ideas and can think outside the box. Then others come along afterward and duplicate our ideas and sometimes want to claim them as being original. Hey like the old slogan said "often imitated never duplicated." Well we'll just keep coming up with different ideas cause that is how we roll. We brought you well the first magazine in the area, the first bike nights in the area, we are who organizations come to, to put on their bike shows, we had the original friend's ride, we put on the first true bike art show. I am proud of the things we have done and we continue to try to come up with new ideas to enhance your biking life. As always I thank you for making us part of your biking life.

Midwest Motorcycle Swap Meet

Well the weather was a little frightful but that didn't stop folks from all over from attending the latest Midwest Motorcycle Swap Meet. We had people come from Cape Girardeau, MO, Peoria, IL and Iowa just to try and find the parts they needed at yesterday's event in Hannibal, MO. We had some really terrific vendors and everyone had a great time a big thanks to Joe Schuette of The Rocket Band for djing for us and the folks from the American Biker Charities served up some tasty food. We thanks everyone who came out for making this yet another successful event.

Just five days left until our Hannibal Swap Meet. It is sold out we are now telling potential vendors that they can come and if someone else doesn't show up they can have their spot. Motorcycle Business

The motorcycle business is obviously a tough one right now particularly in the metro east. One big bike dealer is reorganizing and another bike shop is moving to a much smaller location. It will be interesting to see how the new taxes affect others. In the truest sense all business is tough right now, the strong and the smart will survive.

Patriot Guard

While I was out delivering magazines yesterday I timed things so I could be near Bethalto, IL at about the time of the services fro LCPL Kenny Corzine. The number of Patriot Guard riders that came out to support this mission was overwhelming. What was even more overwhelming was the huge number of people that came out to honor an celebrate the life of this young American hero who valiantly gave of himself to serve all of us and paid the ultimate price. Please keep his family and all of our nation's service members and their families in your prayers.

Assertions

There have been assertions made by others here that the clubs do not appreciate me taking a stance against events and places that do not allow colors or patch holders nothing could be further from the truth. I receive a lot of support from many clubs, it is a mutual respect thing. Do I trumpet these private conversations and kudos no because that is what they are. So for anyone to claim they know about my private conversations and meetings is folly.

Someone also attacked me here recently as being less than Christian I probably do not live up to every thing a Christian should be. But I also do not pass judgement on others people's spirituality or lack of it. As I said at that time my beliefs are my private business. I am more than happy to discuss these matters in an appropriate setting. This is not such a forum.

Finally I have changed the setting on this blog if you want to post comments you need to have a gmail account. Not a big deal but this will eliminate the anonymous postings. Thanks for making us part of your biking life.

I am going to make some resolutions for this year as regards the magazine and the web site. I am going to one try and keep it updated better. Right now I am looking for a web person but can do some myself but it also involves a learning and relearning curve when I do it so please bear with me a little. I am also going to try and be more active on the blog. My personal life kind of overtook me for a while but I think maybe I have a little better handle on finding some balance now. There are a ton of rides tomorrow and if you choose join one and bring the year in on your motorcycle I plan to. There are numerous places that will allow those of you who belong to a club or organization to enter their premises or events without a dress code do you really want to let others dictate how you should dress.

There was a time when there were not other options but now there are, there was recently a swap meet in Grafton where all were welcome, there is a bike show and swap meet on January 29 at Fairmount Park oh and there is a swap meet on January 23 in Hannibal, MO. All I'm saying is that if you cared enough and took the time to join why let someone else dictate terms to you.

The Old School Tattoo Expo is coming back to town and will kick off on Friday. This is really cool and a nice place to hang out. This years star attraction is Danny Trejo. The event is at the Holiday Inn Express on 9th St just behind the Edward Jones Dome.

Also on Friday night is the Brawl in the Ballroom. This will be held at Fischer's on West Main St in Belleville, IL. Jim Boucher always puts one a good card and this should be no different. I hope to see you here.

It is almost Thanksgiving and I am truly grateful for the support you have shown us over the years. Thanks to all who came out and enjoyed a super day with us at our swap meet in Grafton, IL. The weather was fantastic, we had superior vendors and lots of parts. This was no dead cow emporium. And a whole lot of you guys showed up. The Loading Dock and the powers that be in Grafton gave us just a ton of support and we are planning our next one for this location right now. Dates to be announced soon. It will be in the spring but hey don't want to wait that long then January 23,2011 in Hannibal, MO will be our next show. Thanks again you guys are awesome and we truly appreciate you making us part of your biking life.

Veterans Parade Ride and Swap Meet

Getting ready to ride to Geo's to ride with a group to observe the Veteran's Day Parade in St Louis. We are meeting there at 10:30 and should be kickstands up around 10:45 to 10:50. Come out and show your support for our nations' Veteran's.

The swap meet is a definite go for tomorrow Sunday. We have some vendors that haven't been to this area in a while. I am really excited about this. I think we have the best mix of vendors ever and the weather looks super so come out and join us. If you have heard any rumors about the swap meet please tell me who you heard them from.

Often Imitated

Never Duplicated, that used to be a slogan for a product in the 60s and it still applies today to The Biking Life. There are some who imitate the things that we have done but it is hard when you came on the scene after the original to do anything that hasn't already been done. Now it seems some have decided that I am a well enough known public figure to lampoon me. That is cool and something I am sure some never have to worry about experiencing.
